LAWYER ARRESTED FOR POT-STUFFED PENS

A local criminal lawyer was arrested Sunday evening after he was caught
bringing art pens with marijuana stuffed inside to a client behind bars at
Headingley Correctional Institute, police say.

The drugs were discovered when the lawyer voluntarily gave the pens to
guards for inspection, RCMP said yesterday .

It's unknown if the lawyer knew what was inside the pens or if he was
delivering them on behalf of someone else.

The lawyer has not been charged and was released on a promise to appear,
police say.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Steve Saunders said Mounties are still investigating
and had no further comment.

The Free Press is not naming the accused lawyer because he has not been
charged. He has practised criminal law for more than a decade. The lawyer
was unavailable for comment yesterday.
