NIE: MAKE A DIFFERENCE

An NIE educational activity

DISCUSSION TOPICS Talk about ways you can take charge of your life in
relation to drugs. How can YOU as a group become an active force in
IMPROVING the quality of life in your school?

Develop a proposal to address ways to help students become more informed
about the effects of smoking and using other drugs; ways to seek assistance
to quit smoking or using, and ways to avoid or resist the temptation to
smoke, use illicit drugs, or misuse prescription drugs. This can be a brief
proposal that can be submitted to the appropriate people, such as student
council, the principal, or a Community group (Rotary Club, MADD, SADD, etc.).

A few examples of what students in other high schools across the country
have done along these lines: In one school, a handful of students created a
smoking cessation program to assist smokers who wanted to stop smoking. In
another school, some students created a bookmark with some emergency phone
numbers to be used if a friend has overdosed, may have alcohol poisoning,
or feels intimidated about using drugs. In another school, students created
and ran a conflict resolution program.
