APPROPRIATE MEASURES

Could Sharon Goertz ("Immature grandstanding," Oct. 8) please describe how
a "normal adult" should be arrested? Has Goertz ever arrested anyone? An
arrest is an inherently dangerous situation, especially those involving
drugs. If law enforcement has the luxury of controlling the time and place
of the arrest, all the better. This not only ensures the safety of the
officers and the suspects, but it also reduces the likelihood of bystanders
becoming involved -- intentionally or unintentionally.

I call on Goertz to contact a police department and arrange for a
ride-along on a Friday night. Perhaps then she will begin to have some
understanding of the dangers involved in arrest situations.

Congratulations to the local law enforcement officers and federal agents of
the JADE task force for utilizing creative thinking to help stem the
trafficking of illegal drugs in the University community.
