WAR ON ILLEGAL DRUGS NOT AN ALL-OR-NOTHING SITUATION

John Ornelles leaves readers with the impression that the sky will fall in if
the war on drugs were lost (Letters, Oct. 4). Nothing could be further from the
truth.

Milton Friedman warned 25 years ago that Americans would have to sacrifice
every personal liberty to win the war on drugs. Refinements that turn America
into a police state serve no one.

Canada has more relaxed drug laws than America and is going to relax them even
further. The sky over Canada is still prairie blue and has definitely not
fallen.
