I thank Carl Strock for his attempt Jan. 23 to bring the medical marijuana
issue to the public and show just how ridiculous our legislators can be. (We
know some of them probably smoke, too).

Back in the mid-1980s, my mother was home from the hospital with hospice and
family care, after we were told there was nothing further they could do for
her. She was incredibly sick from chemo as well as the disease itself. Try
as we might, she just could not eat, adding to the list of things she could
no longer do.

One September afternoon, I rolled a joint and took her out on the porch. We
smoked that joint together, and enjoyed the warm sun. We talked, we laughed,
we spoke of our feelings. Of course after about an hour, Mom got hungry! Two
tuna fish sandwiches and a bowl of soup later, she thanked me.

No, it did not save her life, but I believe in my heart of hearts that it
gave her the simple joy of enjoying a lunch with her son before there would
be no more warm afternoons on that little porch together.
