'NARCO-TERRORISTS'

Re "Drug policy condoning addicts is wrong," Other views, Aug. 13: Diana
West laments about the "narco-terrorists" while on the adjacent page ("New
label, old problem," Our views) has the United States tolerating a
re-emerging opium economy in Afghanistan, albeit "reluctantly." Also, I
lived in Santa Cruz up until a couple of months ago. A supermarket near
where I lived would not sell certain legal drugs in bulk because they can
be used to manufacture methamphetamine, according to a free pamphlet at the
checkstand. So, evidently there's a problem with meth being made right here
in the US of A.

So much for the "narco-terrorists."

I know "drugs = terrorism" might seem to be an effective rallying cry to
curb their use, but it may be time for a change of strategy. The T-word is
overused.
