STATE POLICE MAKE 300-POUND POT BUST

A truck that had been under federal surveillance since crossing the
Canadian border stopped to unload its illegal cargo in Lakeville
Wednesday night, landing the driver in jail and 300 pounds of
marijuana under lock and key, authorities said.

But details of the case remained sketchy, with Bay State police
saying only that they had assisted federal agents in tracking the
truck to Route 79 Auto Sales in Lakeville.

``As a result of an interdiction made at the Canadian border, a large
quantity of marijuana was discovered in the truck and the decision
was made to let the truck continue on. Point B was Lakeville,
Mass.,'' state police Detective Lt. Bruce Gordon said.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said the driver was
arrested in Lakeville Wednesday night and warrants were issued for
the arrests of two men who fled as police closed in.

Because of where the truck crossed the border, the case is being
handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of
New York. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Silver declined to comment.

The bust in Lakeville comes a week after state police bagged nearly
two tons of marijuana in Plainville and an additional 350 pounds of
pot in Milford. The cases are not believed to be related.
