MAXIMUM PENALTY DESERVED

Editor:

I am a former police officer (1971-1981, Syracuse, N.Y.), who worked in
narcotics for 18 months during 1973 and 1974. There is no excuse for a law
enforcement officer becoming involved in crime - any crime.

Law enforcement officers are always expected to uphold a higher standard of
conduct than the public they serve, and to act as role models in their
community.

Running drugs, shakedowns and larceny has put these "thugs" at the bottom
of the barrel. I hope U.S. District Judge William Osteen uses his
discretion to impose the maximum penalty.

Unfortunately, their sentences will not include payment for a higher crime
- - the victimization of their families, friends and former co-workers.
