FORMER CALEXICO INS INSPECTOR CONVICTED

SAN DIEGO -- A former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service inspector
stationed in Calexico has been convicted in federal court here for his
involvement in a drug-smuggling ring.

Clark Anthony Miller is scheduled to be sentenced May 28.

He was convicted this week on counts of intentionally conspiring to import
more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine into the country, aiding and abetting in
the importation of cocaine and divulging information that enabled the
importation to occur.

Miller remained in federal custody in San Diego today.

The case against Miller followed a lengthy investigation started in May
2000 when authorities found a car in Calexico containing more than 1,000
pounds of cocaine.

Authorities later arrested a Calexico man, Hector Bermudez, who authorities
have alleged was the driver of the car.

Bermudez remains in custody in San Diego charged with importing more than
1,000 pounds of cocaine.

According to authorities, Miller allowed Bermudez to drive through a border
check station Miller was manning at the Port of Entry in downtown Calexico
on May 29, 2000.

Miller has resigned from the INS.

Information on when Bermudez faces a court date was unavailable this morning.
