D.C. POLICE OFFICERS ARREST 6 AMERICAN U. STUDENTS ON DRUG CHARGES

Washington, D.C., police officers arrested six American University students
Friday on drug charges, as part of a two-month investigation of alleged
drug dealing on the campus.

One student was charged with distribution of opium, another was charged
with possession of drug paraphernalia, and four others face charges related
to marijuana possession, according to a police press release. They were
arraigned in D.C. Superior Court on Friday and were released after pleading
not guilty and promising to return to court to respond to the charges.

Four of the arrested students are barred from the campus unless they have
the permission of university public-safety officials, said Todd Semak, a
spokesman for American.

He said more arrests of university students are planned, but he said he did
not know how many arrests or when they would occur. He said the university
had tipped off the Washington police to its suspicions about drug dealing
on campus.

Mr. Semak did not identify the students arrested, and the Washington police
were unavailable Sunday to comment on the matter.
