BATTLING DRUGS

I assume Imran Yusuf is unaware that America has already invaded some major
drug-producing countries ["How to End the Drug Problem," Viewpoints, Oct.
7]. In every country, we have had horrendous results.

In South America, we have been using fumigation to rid the continent of its
drug-producing crops only to see the production of cocaine rise because the
collateral damage adds fuel to the fire of anti-American sentiment. In
Afghanistan, under the guise of keeping the peace, America has helped
produce the largest opium-poppy crop in history. Somehow I doubt our
government will show the same consideration to our opium and heroin users as
they have to the producers.

Why aren't the media making a big deal about this hypocrisy? Do you enjoy
seeing our number of addicts and prisoners increase?
