I READ WITH DISAPPOINTMENT ABOUT THE POLL THE PLAIN DEALER

I read with disappointment about the poll The Plain Dealer commissioned
regarding Issue 1, the drug treatment initiative. I thought how unfortunate
that those opposed to Issue 1 are under the assumption that it is more
expensive to offer treatment than incarceration. If the voting public had
the figures given to them correctly and looked at the money saved in crime
reduction, people would likely feel differently.

Then I read with horror about the murder and dismemberment of Kristen
Jackson. A young girl, with her whole life before her, was snuffed out
before she even had a chance to really enjoy her place on this planet. Then
I read about the suspect in the case of Kristen, Joel Yockey, a man who was
just released six months ago after serving a 15-year sentence for raping a
17-year-old in 1986.

This man probably was released from prison to free up a bed. His time was
served, and there are 1,000 minor drug offenders who must serve their
mandatory sentences.

Those of you opposed to Issue 1, look at it again. Review the tragedies
perpetrated over the last summer against children in our communities by
repeat violent offenders, and ask yourselves who you would rather have in
your community: a recovering addict or a violent offender who has his eye
on your children.
