IRRESPONSIBLE MOVE

Dear Editor:

I am shocked and disgusted that our government has been considering
legalizing marijuana. This drug not only has repugnant effects on the
users, but on other people in their lives.

It's true that marijuana isn't physically addictive, but it's been proven
to be both mentally and emotionally addictive. It falsely triggers the
nerves in the brain that induce happiness, and provides a temporary and
false sense of satisfaction. Some of the consequences of smoking pot are
insomnia, organizational deficiencies and anxiety.

The government sets a standard for the entire country. If our leaders
accept the usage of marijuana by its legalization, many will feel that it's
simply a harmless activity for relaxation, and this is false.

Many smoke pot to ease symptoms of depression, but in reality the drug
increases these symptoms. It can, however, be an essential medical aid, but
only under authorized supervision should it be allowed.

Marijuana is a dangerous and sometimes deadly substance, and its effects
are terrifying. The government has a responsibility to its people to make
laws to prevent health hazards and, in general, marijuana poses a definite
health concern.
