BE OBJECTIVE ABOUT DRUGS

To the editor:

The editorial comment in response to the Randal's letter to Lindsay This
Week, Aug 16, stated "We report police activity. That includes charging
those in possession of drugs."

Objectively reporting police activity is not the same thing as simply
printing what the police say or what they write on their ledger. Objective
reporting requires observation, interviews with all relevant parties, and
impartial analysis to separate facts from opinions.

I think the Randal's make a valid point that the press often accepts what
the police say as fact, without doing independent analysis and research.
