A HEROIN PLUS

The heartfelt plea from Stanley Field (Letters, June 1) concerning his
seriously ill wife is a powerful reminder of the stupidity of legislation
preventing the use of heroin in hospitals or for patients suffering chronic
pain.

While adequate doses of morphine would control the pain felt by Mr Field's
wife, the anxiety would remain. The euphoria associated with heroin and not
morphine is the reason why it is the preferred drug of illegal addiction.

How cruel to deny seriously ill people the opportunity of spending their
last days with a feeling of wellbeing, free of all pain and anxiety.

Dr Dick Crane, Castle Cove, June 1.
