AT LAST, WE'RE SEEING DRUG WAR MORE CLEARLY

In response to "Mandatory prison time for drugs challenged" (May 6):

Well, it's about time! Finally, people are seeing the "War on Drugs" for
the failure it is. For more than 20 years, millions of young men and
women have lost their freedom and their lives over minor, non-violent
drug offenses. Yes, they broke the law. But shouldn't the punishment fit
the crime? What sense does it make to allow the kingpins to get off with
a couple of years when at the same time defendants guilty only of
possession are serving decades?

If Libertarian presidential candidate Harry Browne had won, all 1.2
million non-violent prisoners would be home today.
