EX-TEACHER TO BE CHARGED IN DRUGS-FOR-GRADES TRADE

A former special-education teacher from Roy High School will be
charged in trading prescription drugs for good grades.

The 30-year-old female special-education teacher, a seven-year
veteran, will be formally charged by summons later this week. She was
a volleyball, softball and soccer coach and has led two teams to
state championships, Weber County School District spokesman Nate
Taggart said. The woman's lawyer, Michael Boyer, attorney for the
Weber Education Association, said his client resigned from her
teaching post last week due to a problem with prescription
painkillers.

Roy Lt. Greg Whinham said at one point the woman even entered a
student's home and rummaged for drugs. On other occasions she offered
to trade good grades for painkillers, but no special-education
students were involved, according to police.

The teacher will now probably have her license revoked or suspended
when members of the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission
meet next, said Eileen Rencher, spokeswoman for the State Office of
Education.
