DRUG USERS DOOMED

Two correspondents writing about the drug war (Letters, July 13) made
mileage out of the number of deaths which may result from people
sticking garbage up their arm. One can but wonder at the attitude of
adults who, deliberately and no doubt aware of the consequences, elect
to proceed with illicit drug injection.

The first rule of life is to preserve it at all costs but that goes
hand-in-hand with a rider. The first rule depends on each individual
protecting himself or herself and such responsibility should not be
farmed out to another. Those who decide to inject themselves with
illicit drugs have doomed themselves, forswearing the first and most
important dictum of our existence.
