SENATORS DRAW PRAISE

Your editorial "Muddled War on Drugs" about American financing of the war in
Colombia (June 26) was right on target. Once again, the American people are
being led into a brutal, shameful war, with no end in sight. This time the
"justification" is a poorly reasoned effort to stem the drug problem in the
United States.

Both our senators deserve recognition for taking courageous and unpopular
positions: Sen.Slade Gorton for introducing an amendment to cut the military
portion of the overall Colombia package, and Sen. Patty Murray for
supporting the Gorton amendment and one by Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn.,
which would have diverted $225 million from the military aid to drug
treatment here at home. Only 19 senators voted for Gorton's amendment and
just 11 for Wellstone's.
