POT TRIAL CONTINUED TO AUGUST

AUBURN - Former Libertarian candidate for governor Steve Kubby's marijuana
trial has been continued until Aug. 15 and reassigned to Judge John L.
Cosgrove at the Placer County Court House in Auburn. Kubby had requested the
continuance earlier this month, said Deputy District Attorney Christopher
Cattran.

Kubby and his wife, Michele, were arrested and charged with possession of
marijuana for sale, cultivation of marijuana and conspiracy after members of
the North Tahoe Task Force seized 265 plants from the couple's Olympic
Valley home in January 1999.

Kubby, a vocal advocate of medicinal marijuana, maintains that he is
protected under Proposition 215, which allows for the use of the drug when
prescribed by a physician. He has suffered from adrenal cancer for more than
22 years and credits marijuana with his survival.

Cattran does not believe that the marijuana was meant for personal,
medicinal use, citing the considerable size of Kubby's operation. The task
force found four separate growing rooms yielding an estimated $420,000 worth
of marijuana.
