STUDENTS SUPPORT NOTIFYING PARENTS OF DRUG, ALCOHOL VIOLATIONS

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - University of Wyoming student leaders are backing
a proposed policy that would notify parents of students who violate
alcohol and drug rules.

The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming voted 16-9
Tuesday to support the proposal, which university trustees plan to
review at their meeting Friday and Saturday.

The student group reviewed the proposal at the trustees' request, and
has suggested appointing a committee of students and university
officials to evaluate the policy each year.

Committee recommendations to change or eliminate the policy would be
considered by the university president.

The policy would be reserved for only severe or repeated violations
and those that endanger the health or welfare of students or others,
according to university officials.

A new federal law allows colleges to notify parents any time students
under 21 violate laws or school rules pertaining to alcohol and drugs.
Notification had been prohibited under the Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act.
