DRUG SUSPECT SHOT BY METRO DRUG UNIT AUTHORITIES

Members of the Milwaukee County Metro Drug Unit shot a drug suspect
Tuesday afternoon in West Allis after a drug bust went awry and the
suspect pointed a handgun at a sheriff's captain, police said.

The Milwaukee man was shot in the chest, legs and buttocks after a
chase that ended between apartment buildings in the 6900 block of W.
Orchard St.

He is in stable condition at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in
Wauwatosa, said West Allis Police Capt. Richard Polaski.

According To Polaski:

A 51-year-old sheriff's captain with the drug unit was doing a
"buy-bust" about 2 p.m., where the undercover deputy or officer buys
drugs from a suspect and then makes an arrest.

The captain was attempting to buy cocaine from the man in front of a
house in the 1400 or 1500 block of S. 71st St. when the suspect
threatened to shoot him over a disagreement about where and when the
drugs would be exchanged.

The captain wanted to exchange the drugs inside the house and the man
wanted to stay outside.

A surveillance team listening to the conversation through a wire
called for assistance for the captain. When additional members of the
unit arrived, the man ran and shot at least three times at the
officers and deputies in pursuit.

When police trapped the man between the buildings, he pointed a
handgun at the captain who was in an undercover car. The captain, a
detective and a Milwaukee police officer fired at him. It was unknown
whether he was shot by all three.

Polaski said it looks as if the man was shot three times, but he was
unsure because the man was hit once with a shotgun round.

The captain, detective and officer have been placed on administrative
duty until the investigation is complete.

Polaski said police have not been able to identify the man, who may
face drug and attempted homicide charges, because he was
uncooperative.
